A clubber who smashed a glass into a man's neck and throat, leaving him permanently scarred, has escaped being jailed.

Ricky Mayhew pleaded guilty to malicious wounding, as well as common assault on two women who were hit by flying glass.

A judge at Warwick Crown Court heard that the victim had a six-inch wound to his neck which needed 30 stitches and has left him with a permanent scar.

At shortly after midnight the victim bumped into Mayhew on the dancefloor and turned to speak to him, putting his arm on his shoulder as he leaned forward to talk to him. A centimetre or so either way, and it would have severed an artery. Miss Josephs said that as a result of the blow, the victim suffered a 15cm wound to his neck, going through all the layers of skin and into the muscle.

He also had two other less severe wounds, and two young women also received slight injuries from flying glass. In a statement, the victim said he needed 30 stitches and has been left with a permanent scar to his neck, and was off work for some time and suffers sleepless nights. He pointed out that Mayhew had left the bar after the incident, but later handed himself in to the police.

He has expressed shame and horror at the injuries he caused. It could have hit a major artery, and it required a large number of stitches. It was a serious wound, but there was a degree of provocation.

A murder investigation is under way after a young man was stabbed to death in what police believe was a "targeted" attack in Leamington Spa. Warwickshire Police said officers were called to reports of two men being stabbed near the town centre today.

One of the victims, described by police as a "young male", was pronounced dead at the scene despite the efforts of medics. A second person, also described as a young male, suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition in hospital. Police said a manhunt is now under way for another suspect, last spotted about 10 minutes' drive away from the scene.

Chief Superintendent Ben Smith, of Warwickshire Police, said officers were called to the scene after reports of a stabbing at about 11am. He added: "Officers are also trying to locate another suspect believed to be involved in this incident who was last seen at around Mr Smith said the extent of the suspect's injuries were not clear but added "we know he's injured".

He urged anyone in the medical profession who may have treated someone fitting the male's description in that time-frame to contact police. Mr Smith said the investigation was still in the early stages and was unable to say if the victims of the attack were from Warwickshire. Asked about a potential motive, he replied: "Clearly we do have a number of hypotheses that are leading the investigation.

A spokeswoman for WMAS said: "Despite the best efforts of ambulance staff, one man was sadly confirmed deceased on scene. An extensive police cordon had been set up at the scene on Wednesday, with investigators' activity focusing on a large blue forensics tent on the road near the junction with Gas Street. Locals said the area, just 15 minutes' walk from the centre of leafy Leamington Spa, is popular with students and there are a number of short-term let properties.
